OverviewAs Carolina Herrera spoke about her fragrances, there is a very successful collection of scents loved by all ages. Her first fragrance was launched in 1988, followed by a men’s fragrance in 1991. In 1996, it was another Carolina Herrera—the designer’s daughter—to enter the picture: Carolina Herrera de Baez joined as creative director of the fragrance house. She grew up in La Vega, where the Herrera family had built their estate in 1590 outside Caracas. Carolina Junior originally wanted to become a doctor, studying science at Vassar. When she realized that laboratory work wouldn’t suit her, Carolina spent several years in the film and audiovisual industries. She also opened a boutique featuring new designers and launched her own line of jewelry. But in 1997, while talking with her mother, Carolina Junior came up with the idea of ​​having her help launch a new fragrance. It took conjuring up the spirit of New York, a spirit I missed so much that I thought it would be wonderful to translate this world I loved, and so often longed for, into the language of scents. To capture it in an exciting fragrance that would allow you to carry an entire world of sensations with you in your bag, bringing you closer to New York City, no matter how far away. And so 212 was born. The first fragrance was launched in 1997 and enjoyed tremendous global success. Since then, numerous scented “models” of 212 have been launched, often seasonal editions, quickly snapped up by fans and new customers. Each fragrance takes more than two years to develop, explains Carolina Junior. “It’s a process of constant inspiration and evolution. Yes, feelings and instinct help, but to make a product truly successful, all aspects must be integrated: the name, the bottle, the fragrance, and even the advertising. When I work, I really have to establish what I love and what appeals to me. I start thinking and mentally organizing everything I know, from color to material.” Then all this information starts flowing through all the different aspects of the process. The most important things I need are my memory, my eyes, my nose, my imagination—and an excellent creative team. Carolina Junior is now the force behind many of the 212 fragrances and Carolina Herrera launches. She clearly loves working alongside her mother: “It’s really easy to work with her. We don’t have the same taste in everything, but we’re not opposites either. We complement each other very well.”
